Free Kindle Apps

If you want to read Kindle books but you don't have a Kindle reader then there's no need to despair. Amazon have bent over backwards to make it easy to read Kindle books without a Kindle.

Currently there are Kindle apps for the following devices:

  • Windows PC
  • The Apple Mac
  • The iPhone
  • The iPad
  • The Blackberry smartphone
  • Any device which runs Android

Some people do worry about being "tied" to the Kindle. To a certain extent, it can be a valid concern with any piece of relatively new technology. However, based on the list of devices which can be used to read Kindle books, it doesn't look as if there is really too much to worry about.

It's worth remembering that Amazon started out as an online book retailer. They not only have a pedigree when it comes to selling books, it's something that they are passionate about. At the moment, e-book readers are hot trendy gadgets - but somewhere down the line the dust will settle and the electronic book market will stabilise.

When this happens, it will be the companies who have an interest in book sales as well as electronics sales that maintain a presence and continue to support their products - both in terms of hardware updates and the release of new e-book editions. Companies like Amazon and Barnes and Noble are much more likely to be in it for the long haul than pure electronics manufacturers.

From your point of view, as a consumer, a company like Amazon is a future proof option.

If you love reading then buying a Kindle reader is the ideal choice for you. But feel free to try out a few Kindle books on any one of your other electrical devices first. You really are spoilt for choice.
